The project “Enhancing Olive Oil Production with the use of Innovative ICT”  with the acronym “e-OLIVE” is implemented in the framework of the IPA Cross-border Programme “Greece-Albania 2007-2013”.

Brief Description:

The project aims at developing a holistic and integrated method regarding the efficient production management of olive oil based on the introduction of emerged Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) tools. The olive oil production and supply chain became less competitive at Greece and Albania because of the use of obsolete practices both in the olive grove and in the market for olive products. The most important challenge for the present project is to bring together scientist from different disciplines along with the olive oil producers in order to introduce in effective way emerging information and communication technologies both in the production and supply chain of olive oil in that way that parties from Greece and Albania will enhance their competitiveness. To this end, the project adopts a cross-border approach that promotes cross-fertilization of experiences production and supply chain practices and challenges of the two participating regions.

The project will develop a set of ICT tools, practices and guidelines that may be applied to the wide Mediterranean region and streamline the production of olive oil products (and corresponding by-products). In particular the project sets the following main objectives: a) The introduction of ICT tools in the process of mapping and modeling of olive groves growth b) The introduction of ICT tools in the process of monitoring and predicting olive oil diseases as well as malicious insects outbreak i.e., implement a set of supporting ICT-based tools to accurately map and monitoring production risks c) The introduction of ICT tools to enhance the visibility of the olive oil producers of the participating parties by devising mechanisms to better monitor the prices of products and market channels.

The nowadays ubiquitous mobile platforms (such as smartphones, tablets, etc) offer a unique opportunity for the distributed collection of crucial information concerning risk’s production (such as olive diseases and/or malicious insect’s outbreaks) as well as social networks for enhancing products visibility. To this end, the outcomes of the project can be summarized to the following: a) design and implement GIS infomaps and database to accurately map environmental information of olive groves b) design and implement of a mobile devices application for reporting production risks c) calibration of the novel software developed by the LP in  a Previous European funded project and pilot demonstration of best practices regarding efficient spraying of olive trees d) study for environmental protection practices, especially pertaining optimal waste management e)study exploitation measures for olive oil supply chain partners in terms of new product development, better marketing practices, and adoption of standards; f) develop a one-stop-shop portal  in order to diffuse the knowledge generated within the lifespan of the project and widely disseminate the scientific outcomes of the project.
